Residents of the public housing estate in Flemington are not only going to benefit from a $30 million upgrade project but will soon see improved security and safety initiatives implemented on the Estate.
Meeting with residents today, Minister for Housing Disability and Ageing Martin Foley joined by Member for Essendon Danny Pearson announced revamped lighting in response to concerns raised by tenants through the consultations.
The first of a number of announcements to come in response to the consultations held on the Estate, the Andrews Labor Government is about to go to tender for additional lighting along the path and around buildings with work to start shortly.
Work is also being progressed with Victoria Police and Moonee Valley City Council regarding other potential improvements. Actions being investigated include resident security training, implementing neighbourhood watch and establishing safe points throughout the Estate.
A range of other actions are also being considered as part of the broader renewal project.
The Flemington Estate is one of Melbourne’s oldest and the renewal project will replace 22 of its run-down walk-up buildings; providing new apartments, communal facilities, open space, recreational space and car parking.
Residents will need to relocate during the construction phase but will be rehomed at alternative accommodation. All residents will have the first opportunity to return to the Estate once construction has finished.
While on the Estate, Mr Foley signed the Victorian Public Tenants Association pledge of commitment that the renewal project will not result in a reduction in security of tenure; that residents will have the right to return and rent will be capped at 25 per cent of household income for returning residents.
