The Andrews Labor Government’s investment of nearly $50 million will deliver a new ward for young patients with a range of different illnesses, including cancer, and a bigger and better designed emergency department – meaning even more children can be seen and reducing waiting times.

The project will also deliver upgraded staff rooms, a new entrance to the emergency department and a purpose-built sensory room, to provide children and families with a welcoming and calming space to receive treatment.

The new ward will allow treatment of an additional 2,730 children a year, while increasing the emergency department capacity will allow around 13,140 extra children to be treated each year.

As part of the Victorian Government’s $229.3 million redevelopment of Goulburn Valley Health Shepparton Hospital, local parents will have everything they need to start a family closer to home with the new 12-bed maternity unit, 10-cot special care nursery and a 12-bed paediatric ward. Additionally, emergency department capacity will double and have a more efficient layout so that more patients can be treated faster. The expanded emergency facilities include 36 treatment spaces and nine short stay beds for patients who need care for less than 24 hours.

The redevelopment of Goulburn Valley Health Shepparton Hospital will ensure that locals have access to world class facilities while meting growing demand for health care services. The redevelopment will also boost Aboriginal employment as part of the Algabonyah Employment Partnerships program launched in 2016 by the Victorian Government and more than 140 jobs are expected to be created during peak construction.

This investment builds on our $123 million expansion of the Early Parenting Centre network, delivering seven new centres across the state and upgrading existing facilities in Footscray and Noble Park.

These new centres will see over 5,000 more families supported each year, will include residential family units that families can stay at overnight, and provide improved access to support for regional and outer-metropolitan parents dealing with parenting challenges.

All Victorian families with children from birth to 4 years who need more specialised or targeted support can access Early Parenting Centres.

Three temporary sites in Hoppers Lane, Craigieburn, and Pakenham will also be converted to permanent sites so Victorians in these areas can continue to access this life-saving service.

This week is World Haemochromatosis Week. The aim This week is World Haemochromatosis Week. The aim is to increase awareness of the health implications of what is Australia’s most common genetic disorder, which causes your body to absorb too much iron from food. It is easy to test, simple to treat, but tragic to ignore.

Despite haemochromatosis affecting 1 in 200 Australians, it is often underdiagnosed because the symptoms of tiredness, muscle weakness and joint pain are generic and non-specific. However, when detected early haemochromatosis can be managed easily through blood donations, and is no barrier to a normal life or life expectancy.

Port Melbourne has lost another link to it's worki Port Melbourne has lost another link to it's working-history with the passing of Perce White this morning,

Perc lived by his values of decency, dedication, and comradeship. He had a long list of achievements, and his local community involvement was extensive – he was an MUA life member, a Councillor with the City of Port Melbourne from 1972-94 including six terms as Mayor. He was Founding Chair of the Port Melbourne Historical and Preservation Society, Municipal Association of Victoria’s representative on the board of the Port of Melbourne Authority, Chair of Nott St State School, Convenor of the Australian Local Government Nuclear Free Zone Secretariat, and he eagerly embraced multi-culturalism in the Port community. He was an anti-nuclear and peace activist and worked to assist people doing it tough through his involvement with the South Port Unemployed Group which provided financial and moral and in-kind support to unemployed people.

His involvement in many Australian and International union campaigns for solidarity, justice and labour rights were known, respected, and admired by generations of workers here in Australia and around the world.

Perc along with the late Bunna Walsh are to be recognised in their efforts to keep the local Port Melbourne ANZAC Day Commemoration service thriving after the closure of the Port Melbourne RSL. As Perc said on the issue “We made a pledge, a commitment – we will not forget them. End of story."

Perc was a Port Melbourne boy through and through, born in 1932, worked on the waterfront and was a family man, a community man and was well respected by all. A true friend, a unionist and lifelong defender of social justice and workers rights.

Our collective hearts are heavy. My condolences to Perc’s family and all that knew and loved him.

Vale Perc White.

P.S. I once introduced Perce to my children as "The king of Port Melbourne". He said "Comrade please - I am a Republican."
Today, on the first day of Pride Month, I joined @ Today, on the first day of Pride Month, I joined @julianaaddison in Ballarat to announce the creation of new wellbeing support services in safe spaces for LGBTIQ+ young people in western Victoria.

The Victorian Budget 2022-23 includes $3.2 million to fund the design and delivery of these services, a direct response to community calls for more targeted mental health services in the region.

This project is a collaboration between local councils, mental health service providers and LGBTIQ+ organisations in western Victoria and I want to thank @andymeddickmp for his work on this proposal.

Funding for this initiative is all part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to support Victoria’s LGBTIQ+ communities living in regional and rural areas – driven through Pride in our future: Victoria's LGBTIQ+ strategy 2022-32.
To help protect our loved ones and our health syst To help protect our loved ones and our health system this winter, flu vaccinations at GP clinics and community pharmacies will be free for all Victorians over the age of 6 months throughout June.

Victorians really took up the call to arms when it came to COVID vaccinations, and we know they can do it again.

Help your family stay safe this winter by getting vaccinated for both the flu and COVID-19 and staying home while unwell.
Australian of the Year @dylanalcott AO visited @po Australian of the Year @dylanalcott AO visited @portmelbps yesterday along with Premier @danielandrewsmp and Minister for Education @jamesmerlinomp to announce a new partnership with @getskilledaccess which will make sure Victorian students with disability are better supported by their teachers and peers.

The new partnership will design and deliver a series of Abilities Awareness in Schools resources to promote disability awareness among students and staff in our local community as part of the Labor Government’s landmark Disability Inclusion reforms.

The resources will include videos featuring Dylan Alcott and others with lived experience of disability – exploring topics to build students’ understanding of disability and improve their confidence to interact with classmates with disability. It will target students of all ages in mainstream primary and secondary schools.

The resources, which will start to roll-out from Term 3 this year, will also see the delivery of workshops and new evidence-based resources for teachers and staff, helping them foster school environments inclusive for all students.

The Government’s Australian-first $1.6 billion Disability Inclusion reform has started rolling out in classrooms across Victoria, with all government schools across my our local community already benefitting from the reform – putting the needs of each individual student at the heart of our response and shifting the focus towards what a child can achieve, rather than what they can’t.

The record investment is also doubling the number of students receiving extra support in the classroom to 55,000 – and is expected to create up to 1,730 jobs across the state by 2025.

The impacts of these actions have been felt across generations, are still felt today, and for too long members of the Stolen Generation have gone without justice.

Today, and every day, we say sorry.

But we know that saying sorry has never been enough. That is why the Victorian Government is committed to implementing Treaty, and has launched the Stolen Generations Reparations Package to deliver tangible supports to members of the Stolen Generation.

I was delighted to visit Eildon Road Kindergarten I was delighted to visit Eildon Road Kindergarten and Childcare Centre in St Kilda last week to distribute Kinder Kits to some very happy kids. The kits are available to all kids starting funded 3-year-old and Early Start kinder this year.

Community-run, not-for-profit early childhood services are an invaluable resource in local communities. They deliver some of the highest quality education and care in Australia. They create strong, connected, and active local communities, just like those in my local community. That’s why we need to give kids like these the certainty and security that community-run childcare services bring.
