About Martin

Martin lives in Elwood with his family and two dogs Fred and Ginger. He has lived in the area for 20 years and has a family connection stretching back to 1937.

Martin was educated at Catholic and State schools before graduating from Monash University with an Honours degree in History and Politics, and then completing a Masters of Commerce at Melbourne University.

Before being elected, Martin was the Chief of Staff to the Minister for Police and Emergency Services. He has also worked as a senior official of the Australian Services Union, a community worker in Public Housing; and in fields as diverse as telephone betting, jackerooing and finance. Martin has a long history of participation in community life. He was a founder of St Kilda Heritage Watch an organisation set up to protect the unique built and social form of St Kilda. He is a longstanding member of the Australian Conservation Foundation and other local environmental groups. Martin has always been interested in public policy, particularly in the areas of health, human rights and the economy.

He is the Vice President of the Centre for Policy Development – a progressive ideas network and think tank. Martin’s record of community involvement and engagement with policy-making leave him well-placed to be a strong voice in Government for Albert Park.

PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEES

Parliamentary Committees allow for in-depth inquiry and public consultation on policy issues before decisions are made in Parliament. They form an important avenue for relevant groups and the wider community to be involved in policy-making through public hearings and submissions to inquiries. Martin is currently a member of the Law Reform Committee.

The Law Reform Committee is a bi-partisan investigatory committee whose role is to look into any proposals involving legal, constitutional and parliamentary reform or the administration of justice, and to report findings and recommendations to Parliament.

Information on current inquiries and membership can be found at http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/lawreform/
